Professor Dominic Fitzgerald



Associate Professor Dominic Fitzgerald is a paediatric respiratory and sleep physician in Sydney who works at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead. He has a long standing clinical and research interest in children born preterm and the respiratory consequences of preterm delivery.

Dominic graduated from The University of Sydney and went on to train in paediatrics and paediatric respiratory medicine at The Royal Alexandra Hospital for Children at Camperdown in Sydney. Included in this was a 1 year Fellowship in perinatal Medicine at King George V Hospital for Mothers and Babies in Sydney. He completed his PhD on “The consequences of occult hypoxaemia in chronic neonatal lung disease” prior to undertaking a two year post-doctoral Fellowship at Montreal Children’s Hospital /McGill University in Canada. Upon returning to Australia, Dominic worked at John Hunter Hospital in Newcastle prior to joining the Department of Respiratory Medicine at the Children’s Hospital at Westmead in 1999. He continues to work in respiratory and sleep medicine, running a busy clinical practice, undertaking and supervising clinical research in paediatric respiratory medicine.

Dominic has a long standing interest in the care of children born preterm. He has been actively involved in the management of children with respiratory problems complicating preterm birth for over 15 years. He has established an infant lung disorders clinic at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead which caters for preterm and term infants with a wide range of respiratory problems.

Medical education of medical students, trainees in paediatrics and respiratory medicine, general practitioners and fellow paediatricians is an enjoyable part of Dominic’s work. He is an editor of an international paediatric respiratory journal [Paediatric Respiratory Reviews], has been a regular contributor to the GP magazine Medical Observer since 1999 and has convened Medical Grand Rounds at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead since 2000. Dominic is a member of the Paediatric Policy Committee of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians.

Dominic has experience in the neonatal intensive care unit as parent and paediatrician which has given him a broad perspective when discussing the consequences of preterm delivery.
